Senior Software Engineer (Java)

We’re looking for a talented and experienced software engineer with a broad and deep understanding of Java technologies and tools to expand our development team. You’ll need to be creative and flexible, interested in technically challenging work, able to learn quickly and hit the ground running. You’ll be self-motivated and have a serious interest in tools for software quality and in recent advances in programming language technology.

We build software tools that automatically find defects in enterprise-scale Java code bases, using static analysis methods from recent research. Writing quality software is hard; our business is producing tools that make the hardest aspects of the job easier, drawing on a deep understanding of software and programming languages. Our initial focus is on concurrency bugs because they are the trickiest ones to nail using testing.

Essential: Multi-threaded Java; Java platform technology (JVM etc.); building production quality software; creative and flexible; good collaborator; able to make and meet effort/time estimates; good undergraduate degree with strong computer science background; willing to work in a start-up environment.

Desirable: Commercial software development, experience taking a start-up software product to market; OCaml, Scala, Datalog or other functional programming language; interest in programming language technology and software quality; web technologies. Several of the following: enterprise Java (e.g. Spring, JEE), developing or using Eclipse and/or Sonar plugins and/or static analysis software, integration with Ant and/or Maven, GWT, SWT/Face, developing compilers.

Company: Contemplate is a spin-out from the University of Edinburgh’s acclaimed School of Informatics. The company has a strong research heritage, is well-funded, and is on track to release its first product in the near future. Early versions are in trials with two of the global top-10 investment banks.
