Back-end Engineer

at Beauhurst in London

Are you an experienced Pythonista with a passion for data? Do you enjoy building web applications that are fast, reliable and performant? Then have a look below – we need you at Beauhurst!

About us and your role:

We are on a mission to track every interesting startup and high-growth company in the UK. We help advisors, investors, government and educators learn about the UK’s most ambitious companies through our platform, a Django-based web application built on top of Postgresql.

We’re a data company at our core, and we’re looking for a confident back-end developer to help lead our quest to discover, process and display even more information on UK scale-ups. You’ll be involved in data modelling and performance, with plenty of opportunities to:

  • Scale up and optimise our existing application
  • Build efficient search engines for large-scale datasets (think millions of records)
  • Get involved in creating pipelines for our data analysis processes

Don’t worry if all of this seems a bit daunting for one person – you’ll be working alongside a team of committed Django developers and data scientists in a tightly-knit, expanding development team.

We’re looking for:

  • Proficiency in Python and preferably experience in a Python web framework (Django, Flask, Pyramid)
  • Good working knowledge of Postgresql (triggers, locking, constraints, transactions)
  • An all-around expertise in data warehousing and modelling

Bonus points if you have one or more of these:

  • In-depth knowledge of the Django ORM
  • Advanced Postgresql skills: performance optimisation, full-text search
  • Experience with ElasticSearch or similar search engines
  • Experience in Linux server administration and familiarity Amazon Web Services (EC2)
  • Experience with natural language processing or machine learning techniques

What it’s like to work with us:

  • Friendly, relaxed and collaborative startup culture including an expanding development team with a flat structure
  • Monthly skill-sharing meetings in our office and sponsorship to attend relevant conferences (PyCon, DjangoCon, PyData)
  • Competitive salary (of course!)
  • Access to a well-stocked ever growing programming book collection
  • Our newly renovated Brixton office is stocked with coffee, tea, beer, soft drinks, fresh fruit and snacks
  • Regular evenings out (we’re a very sociable bunch!)
