MyBuilder.com is an innovative, successful web business based in Central London, enabling homeowners to find reliable tradesmen through the power of customer feedback. We are a hard working, close-knit team dedicated to creating an incredible product that solves a genuine problem.
We’re one of the largest home services marketplaces in the UK and earlier this year we became part of IAC, a well known New York based internet group (Ask.com, Expedia, Tripadvisor, Vimeo, Match.com, Tinder and HomeAdvisor, to name a few of their brands). IAC is the best partner we could hope for, with a long history of investing in and growing market leading home services marketplaces around the world.
We’re looking for an experienced Head of Marketing to help us take MyBuilder.com to the next level. Reporting to the CEO, you’ll be responsible for the marketing team, currently at four people but expected to grow. To give you a Flavor Flav, our marketing activities can be divided into three broad strands:
We’ve achieved great success with our digital / performance marketing activities. Our paid search is top notch and always improving, we’re using facebook to acquire homeowners and tradespeople, we do a bit of display advertising (but our creatives need work), and there’s a big ass list of stuff that we’ve tried and binned. We definitely get digital marketing, but there’s always room for improvement!
Content, PR and events
MyBuilder is a very human business and we like to use that to our advantage. The team includes an in-house writer (who doesn’t write job ads – the hiring manager does that!) and unusually perhaps, an in-house photographer. We also have someone dedicated to events and we get a lot of press coverage and links from some of the amazing things that she organises. We’re eager to scale all this up and see what else we can do with more people.
Old school advertising
Our first TV ad from 2009 was pretty weird. We certainly didn’t know what we were doing, and it showed. We’ve learned a lot since then and have experimented with lots of other types of above the line stuff. At the moment we’ve been running a bootstrapped TV ad (interesting story, so do ask!) and are working on another one. We’re determined to get good at this, and we’re having fun along the way. It’s perhaps in this area that we need leadership and experience the most. In fact, our marketing communications in general could do with being a bit more joined up, wethinks.
The MyBuilder way
We tend to do things a bit differently than most companies. We challenge each other, work very collaboratively, like to do almost everything in house and we’re not afraid to try the impossible. This comes from having a young team with a lot of enthusiasm, a curious nature, and a founder / CEO who is a former artist and stonemason.
Our headquarters in Clerkenwell reflect our unique culture: we have an amazing office bar, guitars, a drum kit (a team band, in fact!), a bike mechanic workstation, and a rotating food team who make lunch for everyone. It’s a fun place to be and that’s mainly because everyone in the team believes in the mission and is seriously good at what they do.
We’re smart, hard working, creative people who are proud of what we do and want to achieve something amazing. We’re open about our failings as well. That takes a lot of courage, but we think that’s the only way to be. We’re all learning and growing through life and we want to take that journey with each other and enjoy the ride.
