Chief Scientist/Head of Research - Award-Winning Fintech Start-Up

at Essentia Analytics in London

About Essentia:

Essentia Analytics is an “intelligent assistant” service that uses behavioral analytics to measurably improve investment decision-making. It’s one of the first real-life applications of behavioral finance to the investment industry and it’s hit on a nerve: the active investment management industry must prove its value-added in a world of cheap index funds, and we’re in a position to do it.

By combining an investor’s actual trade data history with data on the context in which investments were made, our technology identifies a fund manager’s strongest skills and where he/she is prone to behavioral biases. With this feedback, as well as automated nudges when old patterns are resurfacing, our Consultants (all ex-PMs) help professional investors refine their investment decision making processes, enabling them to make measurably better decisions.

The role:

The Chief Scientist/Head of Research is responsible for leading the research vision behind our service and the Research team that delivers it. The Research team is responsible for:

  • Building and maintaining the infrastructure and processes that enable us to create and automatically produce intuitive, useful analyses for our clients
  • Creating and delivering new analyses, based on relevant academic research and customer demand
Explaining our definitions and methodologies to Essentia team members as well as to clients
  • Interfacing with both the Development and the Consulting teams to ensure that we are delivering valuable insight to our clients in a scalable way

Candidates must have:

  • Domain experience in equities
  • Experience of working directly with Portfolio Managers
  • An interest in investment behaviour and Behavioural Finance
  • Python coding experience
  • An interest in doing hands-on analysis
  • Experience successfully managing other quantitative researchers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Creativity and resourcefulness
  • The ability to explain analyses to non-quant investment professionals
  • Compelling storytelling ability
  • The right to work in the UK

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • Experience working with Tableau
  • Domain experience in fixed income
  • Experience with machine learning techniques
  • Experience acting as a coach/mentor
