ABOUT THE ROLE
How the Technology team works
At FutureLearn we work in multidisciplinary product teams, collaborating with designers, engineers, product managers and stakeholders. We work in short sprints & regularly share, reflect on and iterate on our work. This helps us focus on shipping small, iterative changes and responding quickly to changing business or user needs. We care about work/life balance and supporting learning at work.
The QA Engineer role
We’re looking for our first QA Engineer to join the team building our new mobile app, and help us evolve our testing processes across the wider technology team to ensure our users get a high quality and consistent experience.
As part of the Mobile App team, you will work closely with our Software Engineers, Designers and Technical Architects to ensure that the FutureLearn mobile app is tested to a high quality standard. You will lead on manual exploratory and device testing, as well as help develop and automate our testing processes.
Our platform is Ruby on Rails and React with a GraphQL API and we are developing the mobile app using React Native. We use unit, integration and acceptance tests to drive design and keep everything working. We deploy multiple times per day via our CI/CD pipeline to a large-scale system on AWS, supported by our Site Reliability Engineers.
As a QA engineer at FutureLearn you’ll collaborate in a multidisciplinary product team to deliver working software that has an impact on your team’s metrics. This will include leading the functional testing, developing test plans and writing acceptance criteria to help deliver new features for our users.
You’ll be comfortable planning, implementing and executing a mobile testing strategy and collaborating with our software engineers to ensure our users get a consistent experience across devices and platforms.
You’ll have strong communication skills, and be comfortable discussing problems and solutions with your team-mates. You’ll be asked to give your input & ideas to help make decisions and shape features via design sprints, planning, story mapping and other product development activities.
You’ll enjoy learning, teaching & sharing your experience with your colleagues in various ways; we encourage pairing, mentoring, giving (and watching!) regular lightning talks, and getting & giving regular feedback.
We’re looking for someone with experience of manual and automated testing of mobile apps with strong knowledge of Android/iOS platform specifics, web applications and APIs. Ideally you’ll have some previous experience supporting a product team and collaborating in a cross-functional multidisciplinary agile team. You’ll have experience in writing test plans and defining acceptance criteria for user stories.
Above all, we are looking for people who are curious, think critically, are eager to learn and keen to use their experience to help and support others. You will need to be able to communicate and explain things clearly and work well in a collaborative environment.
Experience of any of the following is a bonus: integration testing back-end APIs, accessibility, performance and security testing.
- £40-60k depending on experience
- 28 days holiday (plus 8 days public holiday)
- Buy & sell up to 5 days holiday
- Westfield Healthcare Cash Plan
- Free access to Calm app
- Dedicated personal learning & development budget
- Charity day (volunteer for a charity of your choice)
- Cycle to work scheme
- Season Ticket loan
- Flexible working environment/hours
- Enhanced maternity and paternity leave benefits

QA Engineer interview process
We do an initial competency interview which consists of some screening questions, like checking your right to work in the UK (unfortunately we can’t sponsor visas), and your experience in our hiring competencies.
This first interview has two purposes: it's a chance for you to ask questions about how we work, and for us to find out what you're looking for from your next role.
We'll also be interested to find out more about your curiosity, initiative, technical, communication and teamwork skills. So we'll be interested to talk about things like: your approach to dealing with difficult situations like dealing with conflicting or ambiguous requirements, how you communicate your work with others and how you learn new things and teach others.
The final stage interview consists of a half-day of interviews, where you’ll do a conversational technical interview and a pairing session with one of our engineers. You don’t need to prepare anything & there’s no take-home portion of the interview process.
How we assess candidates
We use a set of competencies to evaluate candidates throughout the interview process: communication, initiative, teamwork, curiosity and technical skill. You can read more about these in our blog post about our hiring framework.
