About the role
Photocrowd (https://www.photocrowd.com) is a well established and much-loved online photography community with over 300,000 members. Our Content Manager’s main responsibility is creating and maintaining the various types of content that members interact with on the site.
Our content currently includes photo contests, photo awards, and blog articles, and is member-centric, with a focus on enrichment, learning, and the art and craft of photography.
All of this content requires words and imagery to be gathered together, from contributors, clients, judges or from the site itself, and then a degree of editing and crafting before it can be published using our in-house content management system.
In addition the Content Manager role involves liaising with the roster of professional photographers who judge our contests. We work with many judges, and are constantly connecting with new ones in different photographic areas. They need to be recruited, and then to have a friendly and reliable point of contact at Photocrowd. We also need to ensure a consistently high quality of judging on the site.
The Content Manager also handles the sending of emails to the Photocrowd community. We send regular weekly and monthly emails highlighting interesting content, and occasional other ones that might be to announce a sale on the site, that an awards have just launched or are about to close, or a special offer from one of our partners.
There is an element of customer support in the role, which will be taken on over time as familiarity with the site grows and will be shared with other team members. The role also includes, for now at least, a small amount of social posting - no more than 1 post a week - to our social channels (Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). We are currently conducting a review of our social strategy which may see our social posting outsourced if we are to be more ambitious with it.
A real passion for, and knowledge of photography is essential, alongside experience in a photography-related role. Whilst you won’t necessarily be writing photographic content yourself, you’ll need to be comfortable editing it, discussing photography with the photographic professionals who are providing content and judging contests, and be able to identify suitable imagery from the site to illustrate contests and blogs.
You’ll need great writing skills, and impeccable written English - either native or equivalent standard - as you’ll be writing words for publication on the site, and in communications to our community.
You must be well-organised and have a super-efficient approach to task management. There’ll be a lot of different things on your to do list every day, and you’ll be responsible for getting them done in a sensible order.
A lot of your work will be done without someone looking over your shoulder double-checking it, so you’ll require a keen attention to detail, and it goes without saying that as the Content Manager for a website you need to be able to demonstrate that you have the skills to use lots of different pieces of software and online tools.
Finally, being a relatively small team, at times there is an element of everyone mucking in together to get the job done, so a degree of flexibility and willingness to step in is really important.
Our aim is to provide an engaging, inspiring and fun space within which photographers of all abilities can enjoy their photography and keep learning.
We’ve got over 300,000 members, mainly in the UK, US and Europe, who take part in an ever-changing selection of photo contests judged by professional photographers. They also read interesting blog content, upload imagery to their Photocrowd profiles, and connect with each other in different ways.
As well as our regular photo contests, we host some big photo awards on the site, including the RMetS Weather Photographer of the Year, Buglife Bug Photography Awards, and Amateur Photographer of the Year. Our community members can also create their own contests on all sorts of interesting themes, and which constantly surprise and entertain.
We were launched in 2013, and have been growing ever since. We’re an enthusiastic team of designers, developers, photographers and founders who have a shared vision for Photocrowd, and take pride in what we’re creating. Our community members love Photocrowd too, and we get messages every week from members telling us how the site has reinvigorated their passion for photography.

£24 - 34k pa dependent upon experience

Working hours are 9-5.30, and a degree of flexibility with start and end times is available where required.
Photocrowd has been operating as a 100% remote-working company for over 2 years now and so applications are welcomed from anywhere in the world, although please note the requirement for excellent written English. We connect every day through Slack, and have regular video meetings. Where a team member prefers to work from an office, a budget is available for a desk at a shared office space local to them. We also ask parents to confirm the childcare arrangements that they have in place during office hours.
