About us

Commonplace connects people with the places they live, work or play to accelerate positive change. We do this because communities that host inclusive conversations also create trusted collaborations, which improve the quality of life and fabric of their neighbourhood.

The Commonplace platform has hosted over 1200 community engagement projects for 150 ‘built environment’ partners. Together, we’ve reached over 3.5m people in the UK (and a few thousand abroad) and increased participation in the co-creation of better designed places, improved communities and societies.

About the role

Data is key to what Commonplace offers, but we have only scratched the surface of what is possible to do with it. We are looking for a data scientist to join a small and entrepreneurial data team to help make the most of our data.

Typical responsibilities:

  • Interact with major business stakeholders to handle data-related strategic questions and problems
  • Find solutions to complex problems, discovering insights, correlations and key trends through the use of statistical and visualisation approaches
  • Create tidy visualisations using interactive tools and work with the business to ensure those are correctly used and understood
  • Interrogate data against our data warehouse using SQL to answer business questions and to better understand our users and customers
  • Work with the Team to build a predictive model in Python to forecast behaviours from our users and customers
  • Implement regular data quality controls with periodic checks and automations
  • Become familiar with our data pipeline and be able to contribute to its evolution with the rest of the team
  • Participate in research to understand how Commonplace data can be used in a wider context to create insights and thought leadership on citizen engagement in public consultations

About you

Skills & Knowledge

  • Degree in engineering, statistics, computer science or related field
  • At least a couple years of experience in a data-related role in a user-led digital business: building forecasts, predictive models and analysing performance
  • Understanding of key machine learning models in Python
  • Python programming skills for data processing, manipulation, modelling and visualisation (pandas and sklearn libraries)
  • SQL skills to interrogate data against our data warehouse
  • Business-oriented mindset, do not be shy to ask questions
  • Optional extras: experience with Mixpanel (or Google Analytics), experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Natural Language processing techniques (nltk NLP library)

  • Desire to learn and adapt to a fast-paced, ever-changing startup environment
  • Entrepreneurial, comfortable building incrementally and making tough prioritisation decisions, rather than having the perfect solution day one
  • Keen interest in high growth sales and marketing operations
  • A passion for working with a mixture of numerical and text-based data
  • Collaborative and creative problem-solving approach
  • Relentlessly curious about the integrity of our data and always looking to evolve and clarify our understanding of our users and customers, reducing ambiguity and driving growth

Compensation and benefits

  • A competitive salary, with a company bonus potential and equity component once you’ve settled in
  • Commission potential based on specific targets
  • Flexible holiday arrangements - we don’t limit how much you take
  • 20 days fully paid company sick leave
  • A tailored learning and development plan
  • Our culture and policies offer flexibility to help you maintain a work / life balance that suits you

Our Culture

Our team is proud of our supportive and inclusive culture, and we are committed to making Commonplace welcoming to everyone who comes to work with us. We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Core Values

  • Collaborating to make better decisions, faster
  • Accelerating growth in sales, customer value and community impact
  • Acting with integrity to make fair decisions and be kind to each other
  • Being brave in the way that we shape the future
