    About us

Adzuna is a job search engine that lists every job, everywhere. From launch in the UK in 2011, we now have more than 10 million visitors a month and are busy conquering the world from our office in West London. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join one of the UK’s most dynamic and fastest-growing startups.

    Background on the role

As a by-product of our core job search advertising business, Adzuna has built a large and comprehensive archive of labour market data. In the right form, this data is extremely valuable for a wide range of industries and use cases. We’re looking for a new member of our Data Science team to help us grow our data licensing business and solve customer problems around labour market insights. For example, one of our high priority initiatives is to build a web-based portal which can allow non-technical users to perform complex queries. (We have recently built an MVP for this, but further work is required to make it a commercial proposition.)

For the right candidate, the scope of this role will go beyond ‘just’ data engineering and include elements of data science and product development:

    • Data Engineering and BI:
      • Working with the existing data science team to define and implement a data storage and pipeline process to meet requirements
      • Selecting, building and owning a BI / data visualisation / query tool layer (‘portal’) suitable for non-technical users
      • Doing custom ad-hoc data extracts and analyses for clients
    • Data Science:
      • Extracting and standarding new features which can be used as query dimensions and which will add significant value for our clients. Eg obtaining qualifications from job descriptions, or matching company names or job titles against ontologies. This work might use any natural language processing techniques from simple regular expressions to vector embeddings.
      • Using data science methods to help improve the quality of the existing data (eg code to tackle duplicates, salary typos etc)
      • Typical tools include Python, MySQL, Spark, TensorFlow
    • Product analysis:
      • Helping to define and design products which surface our labour market data in terms of functionality and user interface
      • Interpreting feedback from clients; assisting with technical sales
      • Guiding product enhancements and future new products

This is a varied technical role which would be suitable for candidates who want exposure to both data engineering and data science, and who also enjoys designing and building products. We would consider candidates early in their career as well as candidates with more experience who would enjoy this level of variety. Whatever your profile, this role offers great potential for career development and growth and could transition into a more specialist role in any of the areas according to your interests and aspirations.

    About you

We don’t like to put people in boxes, but we would expect strong candidates to have the following:

    • Advanced/intermediate Python
    • A technical degree at 2.1 or better (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as data science, computer science, engineering, economics, or maths
    • You probably have a good working knowledge of Linux
    • Demonstrable experience of having previously built dashboard applications (either from scratch, or using 3rd party tools)
    • Familiarity with AWS tools including some or all of S3, Athena, Kinesis, Quicksight, Redshift.
    • Experience with extracting, parsing and wrangling large volumes of data in a range of different formats (eg CSV, JSON, XML)
    • An interest in building new products and interacting with clients such as gathering feedback, acting as the technical product expert and helping with technical sales

    Nice to have:

    • Experience with BI or data visualisation tools from suppliers other than AWS (eg Power BI, Tableau, Qlik Sense, Looker, etc)
    • Experience with natural language processing, text mining, ontologies
    • Prior experience in the recruitment industry and/or familiarity with labour market data
    • Basic web interface development skills (HTML, CSS, Javascript)
