I am looking for a co-founder to join me at Bournecoders, a Bournemouth-based coding school. We will provide education for aspiring programmers in the form of evening classes and immersive coding bootcamps. Our ultimate aim is to make Bournemouth the tech capital of the UK.
The South West has limited training available - Coding bootcamps such as Makers Academy, NorthCoders, General Assembly, Innovate have been operating successfully in London, Leeds, Newcastle, Birmingham, and other areas in the UK, but there are none in South West.
In 2021, the UK Government setup up the National Skills Fund, "which aims to help adults to train and gain the valuable skills they need to improve their job prospects" (www.gov.uk). This £2.5 billion scheme has coding, data, and other technology-focused skills at its core. There are very few training providers listed in Bournemouth or the wider Dorset area.
Programming skills are in demand - "Software developer is the most in demand role sought by employers" (Tech Nation, 2021). In April 2021, there were nearly 10,000 vacancies for the role of Software Developer alone.
Geography is no longer a limitation - Since the Covid pandemic, the nature of work is changing. The world has realigned its priorities with work with more remote roles being advertised than ever before particularly in the tech industry. For example, of the IT vacancies posted on Adzuna advertised in the UK, almost one in four were marked as remote. With its appeal of sea, beaches, and watersports - Bournemouth is one of the most appealing lifestyle choices in the UK.
Things I am looking for in a co-founder (the more you can tick off the better!):
- Motivated - someone passionate for a new challenge and success
- Driven - willing to take initiative to help design what the business will look like
- Entrepreneurial - experience in start-ups or excited and motivated by the prospect of joining and leading their own start-up
- Proactive - Ideas! Initiative! Strategy! Where do we go from here?
- Invested - you are motivated by the prospect of raising the tech profile of Bournemouth and bringing new, exciting learning and advancement opportunities to Bournemouth and the wider area
I live in the Bournemouth area and spent 20 years of my childhood in Dorset. While I love the area for the lifestyle, I was always frustrated by the lack of opportunities for learning, progression and development as a youngster growing.
Now, I am a Software Engineer by trade. I have 10 years of experience building products and writing software, and I, myself, have been through the process of the coding bootcamp. I enjoy teaching and mentoring, which is behind my motivation for Bournecoders.
This role will be purely based on an equity share, so I am looking for someone that wants a new challenge, a real drive to see the concept succeed with thoughts, opinions, and inputs on how to get it there.
We would very much be equal partners given that the concept is only at the very early, concept stage. For the near term, this would likely be a side project or something that can be worked on alongside an existing full-time role.
If applying, please put some thought into answering the two screening questions to help me understand a little more about you, your skills, and your motivations.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
