About us

Bloom & Wild is re-inventing the $60B global flower industry. Over a billion flower exchanges take place every year and industry satisfaction levels are low. Driven by our core belief that you can never care too much or be too thoughtful, we do things a little differently. From inventing letterbox flowers to founding The Thoughtful Marketing Movement. And we’ve seen impressive traction to date - we are the world’s leading and most loved flower and gifting platform, growing at 100% year on year (and we’ve been extremely fortunate to see growth remain strong during the pandemic).

2021 was an exciting year for us, in January we announced our £100 million Series D funding round, led by General Catalyst (backers of Airbnb and Deliveroo), with participation from multiple other top tier investors including Index Ventures (who have also backed companies such as Transferwise and Glossier). More recently, we’ve announced the acquisition of the Dutch online flower business bloomon and the French online flower business Bergamotte, together creating Europe's leading online flower delivery company, with our three strong brands active across 8 countries. We have been named one of the 5 fastest growing tech companies in Europe and are alumni of Tech Nation’s Future Fifty. We were also one of the Sunday Times Top 100 Small Companies to Work For 2020.

We really care about creating a diverse and inclusive team - so we welcome people from all backgrounds, with different perspectives, ideas and experiences to work with us. In our team, everyone has the freedom to give their opinion, grow in their career and be part of a genuinely caring and inclusive team.

The Technology Team at Bloom & Wild

There are almost 100 people in the Technology team which forms a significant part of the overall Bloom & Wild team of over 400 people. Our Engineering team is organised into multi functional squads, each responsible for a business and architectural domain, who are supported by our Platform Operations and Architecture teams.

You can read more about our technology and culture over on our tech blog - Code & Wild.

The Checkout Squad

You'll be working in our Checkout squad in addition to supporting all frontend engineers through our Frontend Community of Practice. Checkout is a close-knit team of developers and testers, supported by an engineering manager and product manager. The squad helps to ensure that our customers have a great purchase experience across our gifting and subscription ranges. This means focusing on important metrics like conversion and churn rate, and owning critical areas of our website such as the checkout funnel, payment service provider integrations and order confirmation pages. We’ve got exciting challenges ahead to build a more flexible checkout experience that suits the varied needs of our rapidly growing business and customer base.

Alongside developing for our eight international sites, you’ll lead our frontend community of practice, working with this group of other like-minded engineers in order to steer the architectural direction of our frontend codebase. There’s ample opportunity to work with other B&W teams too - from building Slack bots, using serverless technologies, infrastructure, integrations into other systems, UI/UX improvements, performance improvements, deeper analytics and integration of the latest testing techniques.

The role and ways of working

We are looking for someone with a passion for frontend technologies who can lead by example. You’ll spend your time working across both your squad and the frontend community, playing a leading part in both. As a Lead then you’ll split your time across the following activities:

Building and maintaining our checkout codebase (60%)

  • Writing practical and yet elegant code that focuses on solving the most important problems in the simplest way, acting as a great example to other frontend engineers.
  • Delivering the product and technology roadmap, working closely with the squad and our Product team

Architecting our Frontend codebase (20%)

  • Working with the frontend community of practice to ensure that optimum technical approaches are chosen across the frontend codebase, irrespective of the domain and squad in which the work is being done
  • Being a responsible guardian of the frontend codebase, ensuring that scaleable and future proof solutions are being chosen
  • Contributing to wider technical decisions and roadmaps
  • Working with higher levels of ambiguity in order to help solve big technology challenges

Leading the Frontend Community (20%)

  • Helping engineers at all levels to grow, through code reviews, pair programming and coaching
  • Developing and implementing new processes, tools and ways of working
  • Contributing to hiring and development of a growing technology team
  • Considering “how can I help the team deliver” over “how can I deliver work myself”

You

You’re an experienced senior or lead frontend developer (6+ years’ experience), proficient in the following technologies.

  • Angular 4+
  • Typescript
  • RESTful API design
  • HTML, CSS
  • Unit testing (Jest, Jasmine)

In addition, you:
