    About us

Abaton is a fintech/legaltech startup founded to help innovative organisations maximise value from their intangible assets (such as brands, datasets, IP, and R&D programmes).

Over 80% of value in modern businesses is now represented by intangibles, yet globally more than $1 trillion of them are underexploited. As assets that require significant legal and financial training to handle appropriately, their complexity requires expensive support from professional services firms.

Abaton is building a digital platform that will empower businesses to unlock the value of their intangible assets. By deploying an intelligent “Expert System'' within the platform that replicates elements of support usually provided by external consultants and lawyers, our clients will have a much clearer picture of the assets they own and how best to manage them. Abaton’s platform will then connect them to our ecosystem of world-leading experts and innovative sources of finance that will give them a real advantage in the modern knowledge economy.

    About the role

We are looking for a Knowledge Engineering Facilitator to extract knowledge from leading experts in their field (“knowledge acquisition”) in order to build the database of rules (“knowledge base”) that will be the engine of our platform’s guidance to clients.

The role will involve conducting interviews and business case workshops with senior legal and financial professionals at leading firms to observe and identify the subconscious rules that underpin their work. The Facilitator will map these rules into the knowledge base via a proprietary no-code “Expert System shell”.

This first year of this will be delivered in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde’s Dr Viktor Dörfler, a Knowledge Engineering specialist, thanks to an Innovate UK grant. Viktor will provide advice and guidance into the process of knowledge acquisition and construction of the knowledge base that will power our platform.

    • Acquire knowledge from experts via interviews and observations, using it to build Abaton’s intangible asset knowledge base with our no-code software tool
    • Guide experts through worked examples and business cases to fine-tune the knowledge base
    • Collaborate with Dr Viktor Dörfler and his team at the University of Strathclyde to hone our knowledge engineering methodology
    • Document progress and best practice
    • Work with our Engineering team to connect or embed the knowledge base with our main product
    • Report to Senior Management about the status of the knowledge base
    • Work as part of the Knowledge Engineering team, defining and building our Intangible Asset knowledge base and others as we grow
    • Share feedback on our proprietary software tool with our Engineering team and suggest improvements
    • Spot opportunities to generate new knowledge and areas to explore

    • Must be UK based
    • BSc in Psychology, Symbolic Systems, a related field, or equivalent experience
    • Demonstrated experience of consulting, facilitation or knowledge engineering
    • Exceptional communication skills (native level English speaker preferred)
    • Builds trust and rapport with senior professionals almost instantaneously
    • Recognises thought patterns of others and encourages elaboration
    • Quick-thinking, fast learner, and able to use humour astutely
    • Digitally literate, comfortable with technology
    • Executes projects with impeccable documentation and organisational skills
    • Passionate about improving processes and business outcomes for innovative SMEs
    • Interested in problems of a business, legal and financial nature (such as understanding and protecting IP, valuation techniques, and innovative financial instruments).
    • Experience with IP and intangible assets is a bonus, but not essential. However, a strong motivation to learn is crucial.
