Tasks

About the Role

As a Junior Engineering Manager, your responsibilities will include:

  • Line manage a team of engineers, providing guidance, coaching, and support in their professional growth. This includes ensuring their career progression and helping them develop a plan for the future.
  • Set performance objectives and OKRs based on company strategy for the engineering team.
  • Communicate progress, risks, and issues to stakeholders and senior leadership, including knowledge of company strategy and offering advice to upper management.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the engineering team, and implement processes and strategies to support this culture. This includes access to learning resources and helping team members make career changes if desired.
  • Ensure that team members are aware of the people they are working with, the projects being worked on, and what's happening across projects. This includes day-to-day responsibilities and project allocation.
  • Help resolve conflicts within the team and work with technical leads and senior leadership to address conflicts outside of the team.
  • Manage onboarding for new team members and ensure they have the support they need to be successful.
  • Help team members navigate communication channels, directing them to the right person for their needs.
  • Help the management team define processes and strategies for company success, and communicate those strategies to the engineering team to ensure alignment and buy-in.

Your work will be crucial in creating inclusive applications that support disabled and older people to have accessible journeys. We are committed to prioritizing the diverse needs of all users, and creating applications that are accessible and user-friendly for everyone.

Requirements

We expect you to:

  • 3-5 years of experience in software development or related field.
  • A keen interest in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field
  • A willingness to prioritize the mental health and well-being of team members and work to create a positive work environment.
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and tools such as Jira or Trello.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • An understanding of accessibility and usability good practices and a commitment to implementing them as objectives for software development teams.

The following are not essential but would be well-received by us in respect to this role:

  • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Ruby, Javascript, Kotlin, or Swift.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing technologies such as AWS (Amazon Web Services), CircleCI, and Kubernetes.
  • Active participation in open source projects or developer communities.
  • An understanding of software design patterns and architecture, with the ability to apply them in software development.
  • An interest in exploring and implementing new technologies and tools to improve the software development process.
