About you

As a Senior Engineering Manager for the Platform Hive in Infrastructure, you will help ClearBank revolutionise the banking industry - enabling developers to ship and run better software faster. You will manage multiple teams through Team Leaders and Engineering Managers. You will also manage senior individual contributors. Your role will influence 4 core areas – Technology, Delivery, Organisation and Culture.

Partnering with Principal Engineers, Technical Product Owners, and the Head of Infrastructure, you will own the full lifecycle of internal and client-facing platform products: compute, storage, events and messaging, API Management, cloud landing zones, network connectivity, cloud billing and cost management, SWIFT infrastructure. You will be accountable for the successful execution of changes, running the platform in production, supplier, and risk management, and supporting platform customers – ClearBank developers, alongside other stakeholders.

You will be an ambassador of ClearBank values and ways of working both internally and externally and nurture a positive and resilient culture in your teams. As a people manager you will be growing people through great mentoring, coaching and effective objective setting, and hire new talent of mixed experience individuals to feed the talent growth pipeline.

The role requires a passionate person who can manage regulatory requirements, challenging priorities and frequent changes, removing confusion for their teams and keeping them creative, focussed and positive.

You will be

• Together with the Technical Product Owner and Principal Engineers, refine technical Platform product requirements and enhancements that will deliver value directly to ClearBank clients or enable IT Innovation teams to deliver value to clients faster.

• Ensure existing functionality, service levels, limitations, and non-functional requirements of the products you own are captured, delivery prioritised.
• Lead, manage, grow and nurture senior individual contributors and team leaders reporting to you, enabling them to run high-performing innovative teams and grow the next generation of leaders.
• Practice and promote the “Just Enough” approach to product development and champion a high return on investment within your hive.
• Leverage modern technologies where appropriate to get the most value out of existing ClearBank platform offering and deliver additional value in the highest-priority areas.
• Use agile principles to enable collaboration and innovation in the team and with stakeholders outside the team. Contribute to an environment that drive positive energy and a mentality to succeed.
• Work with the Agile Delivery Manager, Technical Product Owner, staff engineers, and Principal Engineers to balance engineering and regulatory priorities with platform product objectives.
• Present your hive’s roadmaps, product changes and metrics across ClearBank.

What we are looking for

Senior Engineering Managers at ClearBank are player managers and require a combination of technical and people management experience and skills. If your experience differs from the tools and approaches we use at ClearBank but you are excited to learn and adapt quickly, please still apply!

Experience working in a technical platform product environment, an appreciation of the value of technical platforms and an understanding of the platform engagement model.

A history of leading, managing and growing Team Leaders / Engineering Managers, supporting their personal development and overseeing their management of your skip-level reports.

A mindset of ownership, leading by example and a default to action approach.

Strong written communication and presentation skills.

Proven track-record of enabling teams to operate in a DevOps and/or Platform environment.

Proactive approach in problem, incident and risk management and resolution.

Strong communication skills that can inspire and align your team and outside stakeholders to the platform vision.

Understanding of distributed cloud microservice architecture, event-driven architecture, and related patterns.

Desirable - practical knowledge of the ClearBank platform technology stack: Terraform, Azure DevOps yaml pipelines and templates, Azure cloud services including AKS (or Kubernetes in general), Networking, Identity Management, Service Fabric, Service Bus (or other messaging platforms), Azure SQ (or other SQL storage), Cosmos DB (or similar no SQL DBs), ElasticSearch.

Desirable – working in a fast-paced and regulated technology environment.
