Senior Developer/Ruby Developer

About Us:
Our technology team is a fundamental part of our smart, fast-moving company. As a senior developer you will take a key role in shaping the future direction of our online insurance business and its award-winning approach to Agile development. You’ll be part of an entrepreneurial team with the goal of accelerating the growth of the company, and you will have the rewarding task of mentoring and growing a talented team of developers. And best of all we have the spirit of a start up but with the backing of a successful company.

The Culture:
It’s a fun place to work and everyone is engaged and on our journey. We want to make this one of the best companies to work for and our people are making this happen. We’re taking all of our people to Brussels for the weekend soon, just to celebrate all our successes! Alongside all the social events our culture is warm, open and collaborative. Come and see for yourself!

A bit more detail:
You will be designing and developing our systems using Agile methodology, and working to establish best practices and future direction for internal systems. Many of these need building from scratch, and you’ll be using techniques and methods such as (A)TDD/BDD, pair programming, continuous deployment, and modern web frameworks such as Django, Rails, and CodeIgniter to do so.

You will work with internal business clients to understand what they need and to provide value-generating technical solutions. You will be working closely with our CTO, Team Lead, and Principal Developer to thrash our a strategy to migrate our current Java-based technology stack to a Ruby/Rails-based one, and implementing solutions to help with this transition.

You will be supporting, troubleshooting, and managing production applications, and enabling bespoke and standardised data integration with clients.

We need you to work on system blockers with two other senior team members, making sure that we find technology solutions so that business can keep progressing smoothly. As we continue to improve Agile across tech and biz, you’ll help us to make this work in terms of tools and technologies.

Who you are: the essentials
Qualifications: We’re open on this!

Experience: You need experience in high quality, best practice software project delivery, and solid experience with interpreted languages such as Ruby, Python, and PHP. Experience with Ruby and related technologies is a major plus, as are re-engineering skills. You should have experience with enterprise database servers such as Oracle 10g, data warehousing, solutions, and data modelling. You need to be comfortable with Agile development methods and pair programming.

Personal qualities: We’re on the lookout for someone with an analytical mind and a creative approach to problem solving. We like to chat, so you should have excellent written and spoken communication skills.

Who you are: the ideals
It would be great if you also had
- Some front-end development skills to bring to the table, such as experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Strong experience with a compiled language like Java, C++, or CSharp.
- A track record of technology evaluation and selection
- Experience in financial services, or some solid ecommerce experience.
- Active participation in the open source community, and involvement in blogging and conference speaking.
- Anything else that makes you stand out from the crowd, or something new that you could bring to the team. Superb flapjack baking skills are always appreciated.

The bit about us
Simply Business is the UK’s largest online business insurance broker. We provide insurance products to lots of small businesses around the country. With our strong tech focus and our employees’ tendency to pad around the office in socks and jeans rather than suit and shoes, we’re not exactly your average insurance company.

Technology is at the heart of what we do. In 2011, for the fourth year in a row, our parent company Xbridge was named in The Sunday Times Tech Track 100, which lists Britain’s private tech companies with the fastest-growing sales. 2011 also saw the company awarded the coveted ‘Most Agile-Aware Organisation’, recognising our successful implementation of the Agile approach.

There are currently 160 of us working for the company, based in offices in London and Northampton, but our team is growing all the time.

What happens next
The interview process will include meeting a wide range of the tech team plus pair programming. If you come to work for us, you’ll work as part of a project team and experience our flexible approach to working. You’ll also get the chance to pick from our menu of employee benefits, including private health care, pension, and gym membership options.
