Graphic, UI & UX Designer

at The Plum Guide in London

We couldn’t be more excited to write this job spec. That’s because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get in at the ground level of a well-funded, brand led digital start-up. It’s an opportunity to become the chief visual architect of what we hope will become one of the world’s most iconic brands (humble ambitions, we know).
If that sounds exciting, read on…

The Plum Guide is building an online marketplace of the world’s best holiday homes. Period. You can think of us as the Michelin Guide to the sharing economy.

We handpick the top 1% of holiday homes, using a mix of algorithms and physical visits by hospitality experts.
Customers love it because we remove the hit and miss nature of Airbnb, HomeAway, and the like. In effect, we provide them with a one stop shop for the world’s most beautiful and iconic homes. Hosts love it because we recognise their craftsmanship with a badge that drives incremental bookings. Our ambition is to revolutionise the travel market and sharing economy at large.

In a little over six months since launched, we have:
• Reviewed 30,000 homes and accepted the 300 most exceptional ones.
• Taken £500,000 worth of bookings, averaging 30% month-on-month growth.
• Recently closed our seed funding round from an all-star cast including Local Globe (TransferWise, OneFineStay, Citymapper), Alex Chesterman (Founder of Zoopla), William Reeve (Founder of Love Film), Alex Saint and Troy Collins (Founders of Secret Escapes), Jason Goodman (Founder of Albion) and many more (a.k.a., we’re ready to grow).

We’re a design led business. Design sits at the centre of everything we do.

In our view, most online marketplaces have great function, but zero soul. Our ambition is to build the world’s first online marketplace that is, not only wonderful to use, but oozes personality and style. In brief, we want to build one of the world’s most iconic digital brands.

Today, we are far from that, but this is what we hope you will help us achieve.

Being a start-up, and you being the only in-house designer, means that this role could not be more varied. You will be the architect of all aesthetic, UX and UI projects in the business. Your key responsibilities will be:

• Designing the User Experience and User Interface of all new features (we have an exciting pipeline ahead), for mobile, tablet and desktop.
• Working with our Head of Product for design improvements to the current user experience with the view of optimising the conversation of our site.
• Designing our digital marketing materials: working with our marketing team to design disruptive Facebook, Instagram, Display and email campaigns.
• Designing our “offline” marketing materials: this will range from designing The Plum Guide book to the “Gift Box” that will be left in every Plum Home.
• Working with our Head of Brand Marketing to reposition our brand and bring the new positioning to life: developing our identity, look and feel, photographic tone of voice, iconography etc.
• Supporting our content team by helping hem create cool designs for blog posts, social media posts, competitions, and visuals for video content.
• Designing our communication materials: investor presentations, host mail outs, business cards, training manuals for our Home Critics.
• And just generally making us look sexy!

If we could wave a magic wand and hire our dream person for this role, you would:

• Have an unhealthy drive to break boundaries and make a name for yourself as a world leading iconic designer.
• Be obsessively passionate about your craft and have an unreasonable standard of what is good enough.
• Have a beautiful eye: a fantastic sense of design, aesthetic and typography.
• Be fearlessly creative and have a relentless attention to detail.
• Have fantastic UX, UI and digital product design skills and a really strong understanding of besting in class User Experience practices.
• Have a compelling portfolio of work with very strong examples of digital work. Brand and print work a plus.
• Proficient with the latest versions of Illustrator, Photoshop, Sketch and other design tools.
• Able to use rapid prototyping tools such as pen and paper, Marvel and InVision.
• You are a bad ass at taking feedback – you enjoy it and grow from it.
• You have a degree in a design-related discipline: Graphic Communication, Graphic Design, Interaction, Information or Interface Design.
• You are passionate about what we as a business are doing, and get excited by our vision.
• Highly curious and generally very interested in brand, fashion, design and hospitality.
• A self-starter: if there is a quiet week, you invent a great project to work on.
• Just generally great fun to be around.

• Learn like never before: the business is being set up from scratch. You will be the creative lead. You will get to develop your skills across the whole design spectrum: brand identity, UX, UI, print, email and livery.
• Own stuff. A lot of stuff. You will have tons of responsibility and own your “projects”.
• Be the 8th team member of, what we hope, will be one of the most famous start-ups of the next 10 years.
• Competitive salary (varies greatly on the person).
• Option scheme: our ambitions are huge and we hope it pays out for all.
• Work daily alongside an incredibly talented team, who have already built and sold a digital collaboration business.
• Be part of a transparent, fun and open culture.

If this three pager fills you with excitement, give us a ring and we’d be delighted to properly immerse you in what we are trying to do.

And, if you feel you are too senior or too junior for this role, but also got super excited when reading the brief, please get in touch!
