DevOps Engineer - Winner of Best Company to Work for 2 years running!

at Simply business in London

Simply Business – DevOps Engineer – Bank (London)

If you’re smart, passionate about technology and enjoy solving complex technical challenges then you should apply to join our best-in-class tech team. We believe that people are our most important asset and one worth protecting. As such, we’re known for creating an enviable working culture to keep our employees smiling on a day to day basis. We offer things such as flexible hours, remote working and freedom to work on projects of individual interest to name just a few.

We are looking for someone who has the ability and desire to help us continue to the next level of DevOps. You will contribute to our DevOps culture (test driven infrastructure, automate everything, self-service tooling).

A taste of some of our current/upcoming projects:

Current projects:

  • We are in the midst of migrating our applications to an infrastructure as code framework that is auditable, testable, peer reviewed and automated. In order to achieve a clear path for the provisioning and deployment of our development lifecycle environments we are making use of tools such as AWS Cloud Formation, Ruby, Capistrano, Github, Puppet Master, Hiera and Blackbox. The intention is to avoid previous disparate ways of working and get things to a consistent state in order to refactor more easily.
  • Building tooling around AWS Route 53 to allow our entire Tech team to self-service manage their DNS needs for the applications they create.
  • Implementing centralised logging using Logstash/Elasticsearch/Kibana.
  • Writing a Ruby application, to provide a library and CLI to manage Cloud Formation stacks, which accepts templates written as javascript objects.
  • Enhance Nagios and provision/deploy it using our infrastructure as code framework. Enhancements include a more useful alert framework, self-service for teams adding checks, integration with OpsGenie and integration to see the status of our security and traffic routing features.

Upcoming projects:

  • Creating a self-service load balancing solution to allow our Tech team tomanipulate the load balancing rules of their applications in order to better self manage them.
  • DSL-based approach for creating and managing our subdomains with regards to DNS, SSL certificates, traffic manager routing and monitoring.
  • Extending our current infrastructure as code framework e.g. areas where Cloud Formation is not yet supported, integration with other AWS services outside of EC2, extend it to Google Cloud Platform.
  • Automate resource management and cost efficiencies in AWS. This will involve things like detecting and terminating underused resources and automating the
selection of the most appropriate instance types for different applications.
  • Levelling up on Docker and other container technologies to see if/how we can add more of them to our tech stack.
  • Improve our infrastructure to improve/introduce the technology required to support continuous deployment

What you will be doing:

  • You will help implement the vision and direction to ensure things are done in a way that brings us closer to our DevOps nirvana.
  • We subscribe to DevOps being the intersection of dev, operations and QA and this is the collaborative nature of the role we’re looking to fill; the constant dialogue with various stakeholders across the entire tech team, and the entire company.
  • You will be hands on in creating tools to build and automate environments for production use. You understand the need to build scalable, reproducible and usable infrastructure.
  • You are security minded and will join the battle against today’s online security threats.
  • You will be required to be part of the on call rota, and you don’t want to be called out.
  • It’s in your interests to make the Chaos Monkey your friend.

Experience / skills required:

  • Linux systems administration.
  • Configuration management tools such as Puppet.
  • Experience with continuous delivery / provisioning / deployment.
  • Building and managing production public-facing sites.
  • Familiarity with concepts such as ‘infrastructure as code’ and ‘tools not rules’.
  • Strong programming skills (in any language).

  • Creating a great working environment and culture (modern open plan office, flexible hours, remote working, regular team events, paid company holidays abroad, afterwork clubs – like UX, Robotic, Data science clubs, ruby coding challenges over pizza, lunchtime TED talks and lot’s more!)
