Research Analyst

at Cytora in London

Cytora is an AI company which uses machine learning and unstructured web data to reinvent the way in which insurers quantify and price risk. Our technology enables insurers to move from an assumption based understanding of risk to an empirical, data-driven, view of the world.

The Role

The Research Team assists the risk modelling process and provides data solutions therein. As data underpins everything that we do at Cytora - this is an essential task. The Research Analyst will primarily work on data identification and acquisition. This typically involves generating novel data solutions to problems.

For example, say that we wish to calculate the price at which a given building should be insured against fire - and we believe that the presence of a sprinkler system is key to this. If we know which buildings have sprinklers, we must then ascertain the water pressure in the sprinkler - how do you do this? Perhaps you decide to calculate the altitude differential between the water source and the given building - if so, it is then your job to identify and acquire the relevant data.

Day in the Life of a Research Analyst

At Cytora, you will have an enormous degree of autonomy to complete projects. You will work closely with our Data Strategist and your day to day can include:
- Brainstorming new data sources - e.g. do people in rapidly urbanising countries suffer more work injuries relative to the country? How can we acquire data on this?
- Acquiring data - speaking with data providers to scope and purchase their data, or finding creative solutions to obtaining alternative data
- Executing current data strategies - managing the relationships and systems we currently have in place for harvesting data

Every morning we have a Stand Up - during which we quickly recount the day before and scope the day ahead. Goals are planned via sprint meetings and personal development is boosted via weekly one on ones. This collaboration allows for a great level of knowledge sharing and naturally results in frequent social events.

Example Project:

One of your first tasks as a Research Analyst will be to conduct a deep-dive into Cytora’s target foreign markets. This will enable us to understand the availability of data in these regions and, consequently, allow us to selectively grow our exposure.

What are we looking for?

- Self starter with a high degree of intellectual curiosity and a blend of qualitative and quantitative skills
- Someone who is able to maintain clarity of thinking in a mercurial environment
- Excellent communication skills
- Someone who is able to generate alternative, and sometimes entirely unconventional, solutions to problems
- Blend of corporate and non-corporate experience

Bonus points for candidates with knowledge of Python, foreign languages, international experience, or B2B experience.

What We Offer:

You’ll be offered a competitive salary and stock options, augmented by our private health insurance which comes loaded with tons of additional benefits, and £1,200 to build your desk. To ensure we continue our professional development we offer exposure to world leading experts in the fields of natural language processing/machine learning and risk modelling (our advisory board has two Cambridge Professors and multiple industry experts). These learning opportunities continue through knowledge-sharing activities, such as our AI reading group, study sessions and regular talks by the engineering team.

Besides the constant learning opportunities, many of Cytora’s employees see themselves as future entrepreneurs and value the experience of working at a high-growth startup funded by some of the UK’s top investors. As a team made up of highly skilled and multi-faceted people, our social events and company holidays (we have been to Sicily and Andalusia in the past 2 years) are a great way to form new friendships and be exposed to diverse experiences.

The Research Team is at the forefront of Cytora’s international activities and will provide you with an exciting, globally orientated, experience.
