Nice and smart Payroll Guru needed for fast-growing childcare startup

at Koru Kids in London

(₤20000 - ₤30000 per year)

About Koru Kids
Koru Kids is building the world’s best childcare service, starting in London. We’re making it easier and more affordable for families to access high quality childcare. We’re growing like crazy, are backed by fantastic investors, including top venture capitalists and business angels, and have won a bunch of awards.

About the team
We have an informal, hard-working and kind team culture. We’re all passionate about our mission and are determined to create a truly fantastic childcare service to help working parents. Our culture is friendly and fast paced – we are constantly challenging, testing and adapting the way we do things. We’re also really committed to working with integrity, doing the right thing and building a company we are truly proud of. We’re growing super fast but we also want to make sure that we are building a company on really solid foundations.

About the role
We are growing really fast and we need someone to come and build out our payroll function. This is a hands-on role where you will be managing payroll and pensions for 1000+ families and nannies on a monthly basis. Your day will be spent setting up and running our families’ PAYE schemes, processing hours submissions, dealing with customer queries and thinking up new ways of improving how we manage payroll for our customers. You will have responsibility for the quality and accuracy of all our payroll work whilst ensuring payroll checklists are completed. We’re a young company, so there aren’t many fixed processes yet, and few things are sacred. That means you have the power to create new processes, introduce new technologies, make suggestions, and determine how we can do things better.

Everyday tasks include:

-Processing timesheet submissions to calculate family invoices and nanny payslips
-Calculating and processing monthly nanny pay and HMRC contributions on behalf of our families
-Setting up, operating, and closing PAYE schemes on behalf of our families
-Submitting declarations of pension compliance and setting up / administering new pension schemes
-Providing customer support to our families and nannies over the phone and email to troubleshoot any payroll or tax issues
-Processing reports and obligations, including P45s, P60s, P32s, Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP), Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP), sick pay, and standard quarterly and year end procedures.
-Designing and building out how we run payroll for new products and services

About you
You need to be highly analytical, extremely detail oriented, meticulous, organised, and comfortable working at a fast pace. You’ll need a healthy sense of dissatisfaction for the status-quo, and a drive to improve the things around you.

You’ll have had experience establishing and maintaining a company’s payroll. You’ll need to feel confident calculating pay, creating invoices, processing PAYE forms, contacting HMRC, and advising on more complex payroll cases. P45s, P60s, Statutory Sick Pay, and Statutory Maternity Pay are very familiar concepts to you. You are familiar with pensions and statutory deductions. Experience with payroll in the childcare sector would be an advantage. Any CIPP (Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals) or IAB (International Association of Bookkeepers) certifications a plus.

Essential skills
-You have some previous experience (ideally 2 years or more) of running payroll - preferably within a reputable payroll bureau
-You have experience with payroll processing software (e.g. Sage, Xero, QuickBooks)
-Spreadsheets are your friend. We over-index on google sheets in our day-to-day
-You’re a problem-solver. You can break complexity into smaller bite-sized pieces and enjoy solving difficult challenges
-You love working with numbers, data and problem-solving. We love people who love analysis
-You love improving things and are curious by nature. You can create new processes, make suggestions, and tell us we’re doing things wrong
-You roll with it. You understand that startups are unpredictable environments. You are comfortable with a degree of chaos
-You’re nice. You get that no player is bigger than the team. You fit right into our culture of supporting and helping each other
-You’re detail-oriented. You’ll be working in a complex system, and the details must be 100% correct
-You’re able to write clearly, simply and accurately
-You can work at a fast pace and under pressure
