More about Ably

Ably is the world’s fastest Data Stream Network (DSN) spread over 14 data centers and 175+ points of presence. Each day we stream billions of realtime messages to millions of end-users for thousands of developers around the world. In this role

You will be helping our engineering, infrastructure, web and product teams to efficiently deliver features, products and continuous improvements to our global cloud platform. You will be shaping the work and project environment to help teams be agile, continuously learn and improve, take ownership of their delivery, and have an environment that is both enjoyable and sustainable.

You will be successful if you:

  • Are proactive in driving projects forward in a positive way, and want to drive change and operational improvements.
  • Are technical and detail driven, but can see the bigger picture.
  • Care about our customers, your team, and the quality of the projects delivered.
  • Enjoy the process of driving continuous improvement and efficiencies for your team, the company and yourself, in a sustainable way.
  • Can identify and remove blockers to delivery by getting the right people to collaborate and help resolve issues quickly.

Day to day you will:

  • Be a project wrangler: you will be responsible for planning programmes and projects, setting delivery expectations, and resetting them where necessary. You will remove blockers and encourage sensible prioritisation of tasks and goals within the teams, and ensure projects are run efficiently and on time. You will be a point of contact for others outside of the technology team and be able to triage at the drop of a hat.
  • Be a team builder: you will work to foster solid agile practices and processes by working with the engineering team; identifying and implementing initiatives that are aimed at further developing team practices.
  • Be a collaborator: you will work with all stakeholders to help prioritise, estimate, identify and manage risks and dependencies of the project, as well as provide ongoing status updates, through accurate reporting and verbal/written communication. Your understanding of the domain and current issues will be essential in determining longer term prioritisation.
  • Facilitate scrum meetings such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning and retrospectives.

The skills needed:

  • Experience facilitating the delivery of high-quality cloud-native software regularly, repeatedly and predictably using a metric driven approach to agile.
  • Cross-functional experience of delivering everything from deep technical projects like microservice APIs through to web and mobile projects with an emphasis on design and UX/UI.
  • Agile / SCRUM / Kanban or similar project management skills.
  • Schedule management across multiple teams - ability to juggle multiple projects.
  • Dependency management - from individual stories to big epics spanning multiple sprints. You must be able to identify and manage cross-product delivery dependencies
  • Technical skills and a good understanding of the industry we operate in (cloud infrastructure services or APIs for developers). It is important you are able to understand our product offering and are familiar with the terminology used by our developer customers.
  • Experienced tracking, reporting, and presenting project progress to varied stakeholder groups.
  • Comfortable applying waterfall methodologies when appropriate.

Nice to have skills:

  • Software engineering degree or background.
  • Experience facilitating estimation and prioritisation and to handle multiple conflicting requirements.
  • At least one previous role in Tech Project Manager, Development Manager, Tech Delivery Manager, Scrum Master, etc.
  • Experience working with both on-site and remote teams.
  • Bonus:
    • You’ve worked at a cloud infrastructure, developer-focussed, or SaaS business
